Joachim Brohm documents the structural change the peripheral areas of our civilisation have undergone over time. Since the late 1970s, he has been creating photographic image archives of the margins of urban everyday life. His images, at first objective, distanced, almost casual, are precise compositions in restrained colourfulness. Each one is the result of a profound interest in what is photographed, and of insight into the character of photography.
Dessau Files is Joachim Brohm’s first solo exhibition in Vienna. The selection of pictures taken in Dessau from 1990 to the present reveals an interesting development: his work moves from the serial character of the early works to the single image. An interest in conceptual relationships replaces the documentary spirit of the archive. Architecture, Bauhaus, place of origin are the connecting elements of the works shown in the exhibition.
