The group exhibition Borders features a photo reportage that explores dividing lines and national identities. The accompanying photo book will be presented as part of the exhibition.
“A border is not a line.
When one speaks of borders, one must speak of the space of what exists around the actual, artificial construct.
Borders are per se more than mere spatial markings that separate states and thus administrative spaces from one another. They not only circum-scribe laws and socio-cultural identities, they are also sources of fears and conflicts, and thus contemporary witnesses of political developments.
The purpose of a border is to separate what by definition does not belong together, regardless of whether this partition is based on political, sociological, geographical, cultural or historical concepts.
But however static or stagnant spatially defined border regions may appear, the processes spanning these borders are anything but – they are dynamic and vibrant.
Borders are also realms of experience, and while some see only a space steeped in dreariness and disadvantages, others see a great potential for cultural or economic exchange.”
