In 1997 the Österreichische Friedrich und Lillian Kiesler-Privatstiftung acquired over 2,500 works on paper from Lillian Kiesler, as well as roughly 10,000 photographs and numerous documents and secondary archives relating to the life and work of Friedrich Kiesler.
Kiesler's importance as a key figure of the art and architecture avant-garde in the first half of the 20th century is reflected in his extensive correspondence with renowned artists and personalities of cultural life. The photographs in the archive include private photographs, documents of social gatherings with artist friends, pictures taken during the artistic process, portraits specifically used to shape Kiesler's public image, and works of his architecture, most of which are lost.
Eight contemporary photographers are invited to explore the space through the medium of photography and interrelate it with the visual documents available at the Friedrich Kiesler Stiftung. Like the collection of the Friedrich Kiesler Stiftung, the exhibition focuses on social space, architectural space, societal space, natural space, atmospheric space, representative space, and artistic space.
