The ambiguous title Kunstgeschichten [Art Histories] refers on the one hand to works that use more or less well-known masterpieces of the past as starting points for their pictorial stories by adopting or further developing motifs or stylistic characteristics, on the other it refers to their narrative character. It is the viewer’s ability to activate his or her imagination to complete an imaginary plot that is of interest here. The suggestion of a briefly perceived event that seems to be embedded in an invisible “before” and “after” automatically leads us to create connections, regardless of whether these are imaginary or actually observed scenarios.
The contemporary art works on display are supplemented by historical photographs from the collection of art historian and concept photographer Fritz Simak, adding new narrative strands and new insights in terms of both content and style.
