Ethiopia is still one of the poorest countries in the world. However, thanks to its location Addis Ababa Airport has become one of the world’s most important hubs for business travel, and the national state airline is one of the fastest growing airlines. The airport connects China with South Africa and Europe with Africa, and the country suddenly finds itself in the middle of the globalized world. Both Western and Eastern investment is pouring into the country, and consumerism is knocking on the door.

Homolka uses portraits and close-ups to track the symptoms of change and, looking at the Ethiopian populace, explores the discrepancies between an attachment to traditions and the search for the happiness that European-American as well as Chinese desires, dreams and offerings seem to promise.
