Kombinage is an interdisciplinary working and studio community of five artists. For FOTO WIEN Selina de Beauclair, Hannes Gröblacher, Markus Guschelbauer, Eva Schuster and Lea Titz illuminate inner and outer spaces of wilderness.

A wilderness is generally understood to be a natural landscape (or a state) without human influence. It is therefore chaotic, direct, nonreflective, unconstrained. Somewhat similar is “solitude” in the sense of undisturbed time with oneself. The German language lacks a direct equivalent for this – “Einsamkeit,” just as “loneliness,” carries too many connotations of the involuntary, the unpleasant. Solitude could best be described as being for oneself or alone.

A life or even just a moment “in solitude” and wilderness have a lot in common. Both are located outside of society and its rules. An observing entity, which photography traditionally is, can all too easily disturb these wild, and at the same time fragile structures. However, instead of attempting to directly document states of wilderness and solitude, she can try to approach the atmosphere of wild places and times by means of symbols or experiments.
