“I’ve never taken a picture that turned out just as I intended,” says Diane Arbus, “They are always worse or better.” The famous American photographer is not a role model for the Austrian Barbara Filips, but can you escape her dictum? Especially when it comes to street photography? Snapshots, in other words.
Filips travelled to Japan, Kyoto and Tokyo. What she encountered there was left to chance. To the gravitational field of local rites and customs, traditions and modernisms. The result is a genre picture in sharp black-and-white contrasts: courtesy and orgy, hidden pleasures, behind closed hands. A glimpse of what is behind the curtain of modesty. Moments of letting oneself go. Of not having to function.
Can the very personal view of this world be captured, possibly beyond photographic formats? Yes. Jutta Pregenzer, owner of the Pregenzer Fashion Store, will not just exhibit Filips’ photographs – one to three motifs in the exhibition, printed on fine textiles, will be turned into a limited fashion collection. Street Photography goes back to the streets, spheres, looks and moments flow into each other – worlds in motion, frozen only for moments.
