It is almost always the motif that interests us in the photograph – a short, motionless reality captured by the camera. But what does a look at the edges and backs of the pictures reveal? Photography itself is a process that includes the moments and actions before and after a picture is taken. How is an image created and how is it later used? It is precisely this “how” of the images that is at the centre of our interest. Using historical objects, the exhibition looks at the practices of private photography in Austria in the years 1930–1950. Analogous techniques, manipulations and practices of photography are made comprehensible. The presentation traces the process of photography: from the moment the photograph was taken to the creation of the finished photos and their inclusion in the family album.

Let’s talk about your pictures!
Do you have photos, albums or slides at home or on your mobile phone? We would love to look at your pictures and albums with you. We would like to talk to you about the role these pictures have played for you: How were they shown? How have they been compiled into albums, and by whom? How were they talked about? And how do you use these albums today?
