For the long-term project WHITEOUT, Michael Goldgruber is on the trail of the appropriation of nature and the medialisation of landscape perception in the alpine region. For more than ten years, the fields of action of his photographic and cinematic work have been the glacier regions and high alpine topographies affected by climate change and other ecological processes, both optically and factually.

Goldgruber’s gaze is guided by a fundamental scepticism towards clichés and romantic idealization. In his work, he concentrates on fragmentary moments of a landscape that is in a hybrid state between culture and nature and in a process of transformation caused by global warming.

In the exhibition WHITEOUT he dives into the stock of well-known motifs with variations on the landscape tableau as well as with installation works that allude to amateurish panorama montage processes with all their geometric distortions. In his photographic and video works, he also gives voice to an architecture speak that serves the consumption, monitoring, occupation and domination of wilderness spaces.
