The exhibition xposit 2019: Sight and Non-Sight presents Jessyca R. Hauser, Sophie Pölzl and Miae Son, three graduates of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, with a playful reference to the Land Art terms “site” and “non-site”. According to Robert Smithson, site refers to a real place existing in the external world, non-site refers to a work indoors that is derivative of and metaphorically referring to a real place. The play on words in the title – sight/non-sight – connects this dialectic of presence and absence with pictorial and media-theoretical considerations regarding photography and media art. Are photography and film objective representations of reality, or are they better described as a “two-dimensional analogy” in the sense of Smithson? What role does their specific materiality play? And what is, in terms of media and society, the tension inherent in the shift to the digital image? These and similar questions will be discussed within the framework of the presentation.
